When I was doing Miami I was in a pretty existential sort of mood. The songs weren't as immediate as much as they were confused. Like, what the hell am I doing all this for? I think it's a better record in the long run.
There's a lot of experimenting on that record, a lot of things we tried to do in New York that we would not have normally done. I was pushing towards a more echoey country thing. It was a real weird combination of things.
We next went to Texas, where I bought a beautiful machete that I wore on my side all the time. I looked like Indiana Jones' evil twin brother. The police watched me patiently from the back of the hall in Dallas. In N.Y., I chopped up Kid's spare guitar with the machete. Bradley Field was all over me complementing me on my knife dance.
