Citation de Fifrildi

The ordinary acceptation of the name is that Edwin, a Northumbrian prince, in the seventh century conquered the Picts who had possession of the rock as a "Castrum Puellarum", or castle for the safe keeping of the daughters of the Pictish kings and nobles ; and the name of Edwin's burgh attached itself to the townlet on the ridge below, and hence both town and castle became known as Edinburgh.
