Up to the last years of his life, the citizen-writer Sadoveanu carried on an exemplary activity in manifold directions; he was a member of the Grand National Assembly, President of the Writers' Union, several times delegate to the Congress of the Partisans of Peace; in 1961, he was awarded the Lenin Prize for Peace. In 1955 he won the title of Hero of Socialist Labour, which crowned the literary activity of an artist of outstanding value and of an untiring champion for human progress.
