L'écrivain russe Ivan Gontcharov, auteur d'Oblomov, a fait un voyage au Japon en 1858, dont il a parlé dans un livre intitulé La Frégate Pallas. Il y décrit une scène dont il a été témoin en Chine : un officier britannique marchait dans la rue d'une ville chinoise, attrapant langoureusement la natte de tout Chinois qui ne lui faisait pas immédiatement place et le tirant dans le caniveau. D'abord surpris, les Chinois le regardaient avec « un sourire d'indignation étouffée ». Gontcharov, qui oppose cette description dans l'un des derniers chapitres à l'idylle de fraternité entre un Cosaque et un Coréen, termine la scène avec l'Anglais et le Chinois en écrivant : « Je me demande qui ici est censé enseigner la civilisation à qui. ”

At first surprised, the Chinese would gaze after him, wearing “a smile of stifled indignation.” Goncharov, who contrasts this description in one of the later chapters with the idyll of fraternity between a Cossack and a Korean, ends the scene with the Englishman and the Chinese by writing: “I wonder who here is supposed to be teaching civilization to whom.”
