Critique de dianahincureads

"Le Souffle" is a poetic depiction of burnout. It is full of vivid imagery and beautiful language. It analyses the process of losing control, offering the readers the perspective of an individual versus a toxic corporate culture.

New city. New job. High expectations. Irène is starting over without knowing that her new job will turn out to be a disastrous experience. She risked it all, got out of her comfort zone, moved to Guède to work in a corporation specialised in pastel and indigo dyes. Slowly, she gets sucked into the toxic work environment. The lack of support from her colleagues and superiors overwhelms her. Everything seems to be against her and she cannot keep up with the ridiculous demands, the gossip, the constant threats of unemployment, and the competition at the office.

Irène's odyssey of erasure is a painful one. Bit by bit, she disappears into her work. It is never enough. It is never good enough. She is fighting a war lost in advance.

In only 90 pages, Lou Dimay creates a powerful manifesto against the toxicity of hierarchical structures and the patriarchy. Irène could be any of us in our modern society. Her pain is palpable.

The entire novel is written in shades of blue. Guède, the fictional city, means pastel blue, the bluish tint extracted from woad. The uniforms are blue, everything is blue around Irène. The intensity of the writing paired with the intensity of the colours is very effective.
