My grandmother was my mother’s mother. She took me in when both my parents were arrested, and she kept me after my father was sentenced and my mother killed herself. They both abandoned me in their own ways, but my grandmother was there for me. But I always got the feeling she didn’t trust me entirely. Sometimes I would catch her looking at me like she was afraid of me. She wasn’t the only one. There was never any question about whether or not I would change my last name. I didn’t want to be Nora Nierling anymore. It was a relief to put that behind me.
