BONHOMME DE NEIGE

Il faut posséder un esprit d’hiver

Pour regarder le gel et les branches

Des pins sous leur croûte de neige ;

Avoir eu froid longtemps

Pour contempler les genévriers hérissés de glace,

Les épicéas, bruts dans l’éclat lointain

Du soleil de janvier ; et ne pas imaginer

De détresse aucune dans le bruit du vent,

Le bruit d’une poignée de feuilles,

Qui est le bruit de l’étendue

Emplie du même vent

Soufflant dans le même lieu nu

Pour qui écoute, écoute dans la neige,

Et, n’étant rien lui-même, ne contemple

Rien qui ne soit là et le rien qui est.




One must have a mind of winter

To regard the frost and the boughs

Of the pine-trees crusted with snow ;

And have been cold a long time

To behold the junipers shagged with ice,

The spruces rough in the distant glitter

Of the January sun; and not to think

Of any misery in the sound of the wind,

In the sound of a few leaves,

Which is the sound of the land
Full of the same wind

That is blowing in the same bare place

For the listener, who listens in the snow,

And, nothing himself, beholds

Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.
