It took me so long to read this book! The story was interesting, but not compelling. The first paragraph of the book, an old man in a hotel asking if the barstools are getting lower, had me confused, until I asked a friend what he understood from it. He told me that if the man sitting at the barstool shrank with age, the bar may seem higher than before and therefore the barstool lower. Forehead slap. I now imagined a shrivelled old man sitting on a bar stool with his elbows resting almost shoulder level on the bar. Later, I found out that the 84-year-old guy on the barstool used to be 6′ 3″ and “built like a house.” Hmm.
