What had to happen on this birthday was an end to the ritual of measuring, of being hard on myself, of giving myself a time frame in which to achieve the impossible. I was right then, when I thought I needed to build a home, but I found the wrong place to build it: outside myself.
I knew then that I would not be charting my path anymore. It wasn't a race or a contest. I would need to learn to be okay with a little uncertainty in my life, a few blurry edges around my personality.
