Se sentant démuni, et quelque peu rouillé quant aux façons de réconforter une femme, il lui murmura les mots sans suite qu’il utilisait pour apaiser ses chevaux lorsqu’ils étaient nerveux. A son grand désarroi, ils opérèrent aussitôt et elle se détendit contre son torse. Si jamais elle découvrait qu’il la traitait comme une jument, elle risquait de ne pas beaucoup apprécier !
Elle retint sa respiration tandis que le braqueur passait devant elle, penché en avant. Il était vêtu d’un jean et d’un T-shirt noirs, et portait des lunettes de soleil. Ce devait être sa conception d’un déguisement, supposa-t-elle. En tout cas il était jeune. Sans doute à peine sorti du lycée. L’autre, celui qu’elle avait vu quelques instants plus tôt, portait une cagoule de ski, et, à en juger par son gabarit, devait être un peu plus âgé. Peut-être dans les vingt-sept, vingt-huit ans. Quant aux armes dont ils étaient munis, elles faisaient froid dans le dos.
Allait-elle rester ? Pour de bon ? Compte tenu de la référence faite à son « voyage » devant M. Dawson, il ne le pensait pas. Il devait prêter davantage attention à ce qui se disait en ville, plutôt que de se boucher les oreilles chaque fois que son nom était prononcé. Il connaîtrait peut-être alors ses intentions, et pourrait ainsi prendre les précautions nécessaires pour ne plus de tomber sur elle au dépourvu.
— Est-ce bien celle à laquelle je pense ? Cela fait combien, dix ans ? Pourquoi est-elle revenue ?
— Tu n’es pas au courant ? Sa mère est décédée. Le cœur brisé, paraît-il. Après avoir fui la ville, sa fille n’est plus jamais revenue la voir.
— Tu crois que le chef Thornton va l’arrêter, cette fois ?
— Peut-il y avoir prescription, pour un meurtre ?
Cette froideur n’aurait pas dû la blesser. Après tout, c’était elle qui l’avait quitté. Mais il avait été son premier amour. Au fil des ans, elle s’était forgé de lui une image de séduisant héros, avait rêvé de ce qu’aurait pu être sa vie, de ce qu’elle aurait dû être si elle lui avait dit oui ce soir-là.
Personne ne pouvait nager dans un tel courant. Seul un fou se jetterait dans la rivière dans ces circonstances.
Dillon grommela un juron, ôta sa veste et plongea.
A l’évidence, il en était un.
