Mary (Polly) Nooter Roberts est un professeur, historienne de l'art qui a étudié les fondements philosophiques des arts visuels africain.
Elle a été conservatrice du musée d'art africain de New York (1984-94) où elle organisa des expositions comme "Secrecy: African Art that Conceals and Reveals" (1993), "Exhibition-ism: Museums and African Art" (1994) et avec Allen F. Roberts, "Memory: Luba Art and the Making of History" (1996).
De 1999 à 2008, elle fut directrice et conservatrice en chef du Fowler Museum de UCLA. Elle organisa les expositions suivantes : "Body Politics: The Female Image in Luba Art et the Sculpture of Alison Saar" (2000) et "A Saint in the City: Sufi Arts of Urban Senegal" (2003), avec Allen F. Roberts.
