Elle est diplômée en littérature anglaise de l'Université d'Oxford. Après avoir travaillé chez Waterstones en tant que libraire, puis à la Cambridge University Press en tant qu'assistante d'édition dans les départements d'astronomie et de mathématiques, elle a obtenu un master en écriture créative à l'Université d'East Anglia (2012). Titulaire d'une bourse Daiwa, elle a ensuite étudié à Tokyo.
Son premier roman, "The Watchmaker of Filigree Street" (2015), est devenu un best-seller et a remporté le prix Betty Trask en 2016.
