Critique de Rogues
Hello there ! I hope everyone's ok !
I'm here with another english review, and today it's about Picture me gone ! I was very skeptical when I first borrowed this book at the library... Actually, I don't know why I took that book instead of another : the cover I have is not very attractive, and the summary is not the best I've ever read... !
Mila, 12 years old, is going to the USA with her grandpa (I didn't understand if Gil was her grandpa or her dad (sorry Gil ^^')), in order to help finding Matthew, a friend of Gil who disappeared, without warning anyone.
In fact, I was surprised when I finished the reading (it was like 2 minutes ago), because of the odd way the book is ending...
Firstly, the different subjects presented in the story are quit interesting and original ones, such as dangerous friendship between Catlin and Mila (I really don't understand why they are friends but anymay -), the search of a lost friend, and also some information about how (human) translators work (which I found really interesting and well explained).
I also found amusing the fact that Gil and Mila were creating a sort of cultural mix in the places they were going to, like the "I love your accent" Mila is having everytime she's speaking x)
You would think that the story is just about the search of Matthew... but it's not ! The story is cut sometimes by some extracts of Mila's life and friendship with Catlin... and these extracts are not only bringing some information about her life but also about her ability in finding clues during the search.
I think Meg Rosoff should have more developed the friendship between Jake and Mila, instead of Catlin and Mila's one. I really hate Catlin, always giving the instructions and never listening what Mila wants to say ! Anymay -
In fact, I really wanted an end in which Jake is coming to see Mila in London, and they are both having a good time, without the pressure of the search of the lost Matthew...
Finally, I found that dialogues are oddly presented... how are you expecting people to read that if there is no ponctuation and the other stuff to show that one person is speaking to another ? Although it was understandable, this isn't an appropriate way to present dialogue, for me... but I understand what characters were saying in the story, so I think english readers won't have problems with it :)
I think I said everything I wanted to say... I really enjoy this story, it was good, but strange to read sometimes. I would say it deserves a 3/5 stars.
