Lou Reed began using a hot-rodded Gretsch Country Gentleman guitar. Reed fitted the Gretsch with preamps and speed/tremolo controls to produce a chorus of notes behind every one he played. He added a Fender Stratocaster single-coil pickup for a more trebly tone. Reed also converted the Gretsch to stereo so he could get low bass and high treble simultaneously on different channels.
