This book deals with the story of a young girl, Sade Solaja (12 years old) and her brother, Femi Solaja (10 years old). It unfolds during autumn 1995 when Nigeria had for leader the general Abacha who led a campaign against journalists.
After the death of their mother because of a missed shooting, Sade's uncle sends her and her brother Femi to England, but they have to do it in total secret. They will pretend to be Mrs. Bankole's children to travel safely, and their other uncle will have to meet up with them at the airport once they arrive in London.
Unfortunately, their uncle Dele didn't show up at the airport, and Mrs. Bankole abandon them. It's at this moment that the problems will begin. Without any money, any friends, any acquaintances they will do everything to find where their uncle works.
After finding refuge in a market they're forced to leave, they will be welcomed by Mrs. Graham and her nasty son. They will go to different schools where Sade will become friends with Mariam, a young girl who has a similar story to hers and her brother will go to another school.
Later, Sade's father enters England illegally to find his children but he is arrested.
I will not spoil anything more. This book was really interesting, it's clearly not my favorite because this isn't really the type of book I read but sometimes change is good!
This book deals with refugees, democracy, humans rights… So, it's a really good book. It is well-written and the story is interesting. I advise you to read it if you like this kind of books.
Océane.
