Alma De Groen interviewed by Elizabeth Perkins, 1991.

Alma De Groen (born in NZ in 1941) uses a wide range of forms in her plays ranging from mixed modes inspired by pop art and television (The Joss Adams Show), to realism (Going Home) and theatrical quietism (The After-Life of Arthur Craven). Other works discussed include The Rivers of China, Chidley and Vocations.

Alma De Groen is considered to be one of Australia’s most innovative and challenging playwrights. This interview is a helpful and enlightening introduction to her work. She discusses her early plays and the emergence of her interest in the outsider figure, feminism, and developments in her work. She has continued to seek inspiration from the work of visual artists for the form and style of her plays.

The video interview is accompanied by a monograph entitled The Plays of Alma De Groen by Elizabeth Perkins, edited by Ortrun Zuber-Skerritt, published by Ropodpi, Amsterdam in 1988 and available from Brill (Boston, USA).
