In 1850, Patrick Brontë was instrumental in bringing an inspector from the General Board of Health to Haworth. The resulting report made clear that the poor living conditions in Haworth resulted in an average life expectancy of 25.8 years, corresponding with that of some of the unhealthiest districts of London. It was also estimated that over forty-one per cent of the children in Haworth died before reaching the age of six.

On a également estimé que plus de 41% des enfants de Haworth sont décédés avant l'âge de six ans.
