orn in Calcutta, Bharati Mukherjee is the first naturalized American citizen to win the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction, a prize she won for her short story collection The Middleman and Other Stories. Bharati Mukherjee has long been known not only for her elegant, evocative prose, but also for her vivid characters, influenced by ancient customs and traditions but also very much rooted in modern times. Mukherjee speaks of coming to the U.S. at age 20 and of her life-long love of writing. She explains that while many immigrant writers write of their nostalgia for the homeland, she concentrates on the here and now, focusing on the ways in which her characters adjust to their new lives in America
