Biographie :
Richard Thomson est professeur de recherche en histoire de l'art à l'Université d'Édimbourg.
Il a été Watson Gordon Professor of Fine Art à l’Université d’Édimbourg de 1996 à 2018.
Il est l'auteur de nombreux ouvrages consacrés à la peinture impressionniste française dont "Toulouse-Lautrec" (1977).
Il a été commissaire ou co-commissaire d’expositions, parmi lesquelles : Toulouse-Lautrec (Londres, Hayward Gallery/Paris, Grand Palais, 1991-1992) ; Theo Van Gogh (Amsterdam, Van Gogh Museum/Paris, Musée d’Orsay, 1999-2000) ; Monet, 1878-1883: the Seine and the Sea (Edimbourg, National Gallery of Scotland, 2003) ; Toulouse-Lautrec and Montmartre (Washington, National Gallery of Art/Art Institute of Chicago, 2005) ; Degas, Sickert, Toulouse-Lautrec. London and Paris, 1870-1910 (London, Tate Britain/Washington, Phillips Collection, 2005-2006), Seurat’s Circus Sideshow (New York, 2017) et Monet & Architecture (London, 2018).
