Spécialiste de l'art des 19e et 20e siècles, elle a obtenu un doctorat de l'Institute of Fine Arts, New York University et a commencé comme conservateur assistant à la collection Frick. Elle a organisé de nombreuses expositions.

Avec Margaret MacDonald et Aileen Ribeiro l'exposition Whistler, Women, and Fashion, en 2003.
Elle a écrit Picasso's Variations on the Masters, Confrontations with the Past (1996), et a contribué à de nombreuses publications sur le Maître : Picasso: Challenging the Past (National Gallery, London, 2009). Avec Marilyn McCully elle a organisé Picasso's Drawings, 1890-1921: Reinventing Tradition.
