I was determined to be a writer even earlier, from the time I was about sixteen or seventeen. When I finally came home from Paris, I was already twenty-seven and had written quite a lot. There was no turning back: this was going to be my life. There was nothing else I could do, nothing else I wanted to do, and the only question now was how to go on doing it.
