James Walvin est professeur d'histoire émérite à l'université d'York, auteur de plus de 30 livres.
Il s'est intéressé à l'histoire du football, mais surtout à l'histoire de l'esclavage et du commerce des esclaves. Il a organisé deux expositions sur ce sujet.
