Bonjour !
Welcome for another review ! Today's one is for This is going to hurt by
Adam Kay. I have to tell you that it was a strange lecture... firstly, I thought the book would be a fiction book, not a diary (also because I hadn't read the summary like I always do)... so I began the lecture with a bad opinion on the book because of that (and also because I'm not used to read diaries)... and I changed my mind.
In fact, the book is very pleasant and well-written with many information on Adam's work. You are following in his diary his progession in his career as a junior doctor in a hospital (especially in the labour ward).
During all my lecture, I was reading "normally", without searching any purpose for this book, but then I understood what
Adam Kay actually wanted to tell :
this profession, working as a doctor/consultant/SHO/... is so hard that you have to put all your life (friendships, family, hobbies,...) in a closed box until you're dismissed... and we're always putting the blame on the medical people without asking ourselves if we're well placed to do so. Sometimes, as said in the book : "your time in hospital may well hurt them a lot more than it hurts you" and I realised then that this is true. It may be very hard for those people to be working all day and receiving many angry comments on what they did. It is also said that people have to considerate those people as human being, not as robots.
Finally, I was surprised by that lecture. At the very first few pages, I thought I wouldn't read the whole book, but in fact, I'm pleased I finished it because, it's not only a smart way to amuse people but also a way to teach them to respect medical workers. And this is why I did enjoy my lecture !
