The Outermost House

Nous les traitons avec condescendance pour leur incomplétude, pour leur tragique destin d'avoir pris forme tellement loin en dessous de nous. Et en ceci nous nous trompons, et nous nous trompons grandement. Car l'homme n'est pas la mesure de l'animal. Dans un monde plus vieux et plus complet que le nôtre, ils évoluent finis et complets, dotés d'extensions des sens que nous avons perdues ou jamais atteintes, vivant par des voix que nous n'entendrons jamais. Ils ne sont pas nos frères ; ils ne sont pas nos subordonnés ; ils sont d'autres nations, prises avec nous dans le filet de la vie et du temps, compagnons de la splendeur et de la fatigue de la terre.

We need a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings. They are other nations caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth.
