To say that there are very few books of Kanuri tales, fables, proverbs and history accompanied by an english translation is an understatement. When I typed "Kanuri" into the search engine of a South African on-line book seller, i did not expect any results. Never assume. 19th century German Missionary S.W.Koelle's book came up. I ordered it some time ago and finally got around to reading it this week. This collection is a rare insight into a people living in the Lake Chad area who are known by very few outside the region. Although most of the content is over 150 years old, it is reasonably safe to say that opinions expressed have changed very little. The Kanuri are amongst the most isolated and ignored people on the planet. The opinions expressed in the stories would be about as popular with the sensitive set as Tintin in the Congo. Ts&Cs apply!
