“I don’t care what you call me. Don’t ask such a silly thing. Give me whatever name you like. Call me anything.”
The fairy looked away uncooperatively. Anne glanced over at his profile and said, “Fine, how about Crow?”
As one might expect, the fairy regarded Anne with an incredibly disagreeable expression.
“To get back at me for ‘scarecrow’?”
“That’s right. Crow.”
The fairy frowned. After a moment of silence, he muttered, “Challe Fenn Challe.”
The idea of marrying a prince and living happily ever after—like a princess in a fairy tale—didn’t seem like much of a life goal.
Instead of answering the question, he took Anne’s right hand in his. And then—
“Anne.”
—almost in a whisper, he called her name. It was the first time he had ever spoken it. Anne felt her chest grow hot.
Challe gently placed a kiss on Anne’s fingers. Almost tenderly.
It was as if he was swearing some sort of vow.
Anne didn’t understand the meaning behind the kiss, but her heart was pounding so hard, she could barely think.
Challe looked directly at her.
“What’s wrong with you all of a sudden? It’s like your head is on fire or something.”
“And I guess it’ll burn well, since I’ve got the head of scarecrow!”
Challe couldn’t suppress his laughter.
She wanted to stand on her own two feet and carve her own path in the world. That was the kind of life she wanted to lead.
