Et c’était vers cette planète que se dirigeaient tous les vieux Bics errants, en se faufilant tranquillement par les trous de ver de l’espace pour gagner un monde où ils savaient qu’ils pourraient enfin vivre une existence entièrement bicoïde, correspondant à des stimuli nettement bicorientés, bref, mener l’équivalent pour un Bic de la bonne vie.

— Et l’êtes-vous ?

'Of Life, the Universe and Everything...' said Deep Thought.
'Yes...!'
'Is...' said Deep Thought, and paused.
'Yes...!'

'Forty-two,' said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm.

'My circuits are now irrevocably committed to calculating the answer to the Ultimate Questio of Life, the Universe, and Everything [...] but the programme will take me a little while to run.'
Fook glanced impatiently at his watch.
'How long?' he said.
'Seven and a half million years,' said Deep Thought.
Lunkwill and Fook bliked at each other.
'Seven and a half million years...!' they cried in chorus.
'Yes,' declaimed Deep Thought, 'I said I'd have to think about it, didn't I?'

Many men of course became extremely rich, but this was perfectly natural and nothing to be ashamed of because no one was really poor - at least no one worth speaking of.

One of the major difficulties Trillian experienced in her relationedship with Zaphod was learning to distinguish between him pretending to be stupid just to get people off their gard, pretending to be stupid because he couldn't be bothered to think and wanted somenone else to do it for him, pretending to be outrageously stupid to hide the fact that he actually didn't understand what was going on, and really being genuinely stupid.

'You know,' said Arthur, 'it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in depp space that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young.'
'Why, what did she tell you?'
'I don't know, I didn't listen.'

"I refuse to prove that I exist," says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing."
"But," says Man, "the Babel fish is a dead giveaway isn't it? I could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED."
"Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.
"Oh, that was easy," says Man, and for an encore goes on to prove that black is white and gets himself killed on the next zebra crossing.
