"The Last Will and Testament of an Extremely Distinguished Dog" est un court texte de Eugene O'Neill , prix Nobel de Littérature 1936.
J'ai craqué pour le dalmatien sur la couverture ! le texte est très amusant, bien qu'il aborde le décès d'un animal de compagnie, un Dalmatien très apprécié de ses maîtres. Avant de mourir, Blemie, le Dalmatien, partage ses dernières pensées et recommandations à son Maître :
"I have little in the way of material things to leave. Dogs are wiser than men. They do not set great store upon things. They do not waste their days hoarding property. They do not ruin their sleep worrying about how to keep the objects they have, and to obtain the objects they have not. There is nothing of value I have to bequeath except my love and my faith."
Il encourage également sa Maîtresse à adopter un autre chien, car dit-il : " It would be a poor tribute to my memory never to have a dog again. What I would like to feel is that, having once had me in the family, now she cannot live without a dog!". Et il est prêt à lui laisser son collier, sa laisse, son petit manteau, le tout fait sur mesure chez Hermes à Paris en 1929 !
La fin du texte est très touchante : affection, reconnaissance et tendresse débordent du coeur de Blemie envers ses Maîtres.
