Tandis qu’il cheminait à pas de loup, rasant les murailles ou se dissimulant sous l’auvent des boutiques, l’affreux vieillard ressemblait à un hideux reptile sorti de la fange et des ténèbres, et rampant dans l’ombre, à la recherche d’une nourriture immonde.

Il n’y avait dans la cellule qu’un misérable va-nu-pieds qui avait été arrêté pour avoir commis le crime de jouer de la flûte sans patente, et qui, une fois son attentat contre la société clairement prouvé, avait été bel et bien condamné par M. Fang à un mois d’emprisonnement dans une maison de correction.

Il n’avait pas fait trois pas qu’il se retourna brusquement et demanda pourquoi hurlait ce jeune mâtin, et pourquoi M. Bumble ne lui administrait pas quelques coups pour lui faire mieux articuler ses plaintes.

À cette vue, Olivier se mit à pleurer à chaudes larmes, pensant avec assez de vraisemblance que, si on l’engraissait de la sorte, c’est que le conseil avait l’arrière-pensée décidée de le tuer dans quelque vue d’utilité humanitaire.

Olivier était épuisé et brisé de tristesse.

The tradesman leaves his counter, and the carman his waggon; the butcher throws down his tray, the baker his basket, the milkman his pail, the errand-boy his parcels, the schoolboy his marbles, the paviour his pick-axe, the child his battledore: away they run, pell-mell, helter-skelter, slap-dash, tearing, yelling, and screaming, knocking down the passengers as they turn the corners, rousing up the dogs, and astonishing the fowls; and streets, squares, and courts re-echo with the sound.

It was market-morning. The ground was covered nearly ankle-deep with filth and mire; and a thick steam perpetually rising from the reeking bodies of the cattle, and mingling with the fog, which seemed to rest upon the chimney-tops, hung heavily above. All the pens in the centre of the large area, and as many temporary ones as could be crowded into the vacant space, were filled with sheep; and, tied up to posts by the gutter side, were long lines of beasts and oxen three or four deep. Countrymen, butchers, drovers, hawkers, boys, thieves, idlers, and vagabonds of every low grade, were mingled together in a dense mass: the whistling of drovers, the barking of dogs, the bellowing and plunging of beasts, the bleating of sheep, and grunting and squeaking of pigs; the cries of hawkers, the shouts, oaths, and quarrelling on all sides, the ringing of bells and roar of voices that issued from every public-house; the crowding, pushing, driving, beating, whooping, and yelling; the hideous and discordant din that resounded from every corner of the market; and the unwashed, unshaven, squalid, and dirty figures constantly running to and fro, and bursting in and out of the throng, rendered it a stunning and bewildering scene which quite confounded the senses.
