Tout au long de la lecture, j'ai pesté contre le personnage principal masculin, que je trouvais particulièrement antipathique. Voici une description qu'en donne Bailey, le personnage principal féminin : « His stare narrowed, and she could have sworn it took a lethal edge. Now here was the Jackson Malone she'd read about. Ruthless. Dangerous. Intimidating. »
Et voici un des commentaires du dénommé Jackson Malone, suivi de la réaction de Bailey : « He nodded. “Once, I was attracted to a business rival, and I slept with her. The next week I did a hostile takeover of her company.” For some stupid reason, that made Bailey smile. What was wrong with her? » Exactement la question que je me posais…
Manifestement, l'auteure et moi n'avons pas la même définition du romantisme et de l'érotisme. Dès le premier chapitre, la fin de l'histoire me semblait aussi prévisible qu'irritante. Pourtant, l'habileté de Delores Fossen à décrire des scènes d'action et à maintenir le suspense a su garder mon attention jusqu'au bout. (Son expérience en tant qu'ex capitaine de l'armée de l'air y est probablement pour quelque chose.) Par conséquent, je suis forcée d'admettre que son roman ne m'a pas laissée indifférente.
