The book is full of authentic details and real historical material, but it is written with all the suspense and emotion required of a drama. Despite the length of the book (880 pages!), I was never bored, which is all the more impressive since Mary spent almost half her live in captivity! The only thing I did not enjoy was the very last chapter. Invoking Mary's "spirits" to depict the evolutions shortly after her death is a strange idea, and it spoiled the impression of realism and authenticity that I felt throughout the book.
