En pleine course à l'élection présidentielle, les personnalités politiques républicaines comme démocrates devraient se presser sur les plateaux des late night shows. Ces émissions de soirée américaines reçoivent en général des invités en promo ou en campagne, pour y être brossés dans le sens du poil par un animateur blagueur et connivent. Mais depuis que Trump, ancien hôte régulier de ces shows, est à la Maison Blanche, ces divertissements se sont largement politisés, transformant certains de ces présentateurs, autrefois inoffensifs, en efficaces éditorialistes anti-Trump. Comment et pourquoi s'est opéré ce changement radical dans ces institutions de la télévision américaine ? Un livre rempli d'humour et d'espoir qui révèle un passé proche, qui en est plutôt dépourvu. Trevor Noah raconte son enfance et adolescence en Afrique du Sud à l'époque de l'apartheid. Il voue une admiration, qui semble sans fin, à sa mère qui est le fil conducteur de son récit et de son développement personnel. En grandissant dans un pays ou tout est séparé en blanc et noir, en bien et en mal, Trevor doit trouver sa place ou plutôt la façonner en tant que métis né d'une union illégale d'une mère africaine noire (au fort caractère) et d'un père suisse discret, qu'il ne connaitra jamais vraiment. C'est un livre aussi drôle que tragique, que l'on voudrait lire comme une fiction dystopique alors qu'il relate la dure réalité.
Quel livre ! Je ne lis jamais d'autobiographies de vedettes, et je ne regrette pas d'avoir fait là une exception. En effet, au-delà de ce qu'on peut apprendre sur la société sud-africaine pendant et après l'apartheid, ce parcours est très enrichissant. On peut même s'identifier à Noah, qui a une sacrée veine d'avoir une maman comme la sienne. Le livre est drôle et désarmant de sincérité, comme son auteur !

Ce livre peut devenir vite troublant. Son auteur connu notamment pour son humour, nous livre ici le récit d'une enfance en Afrique du Sud. Que vous lisiez le bouquin pour mieux connaître la transition de l'Afrique du Sud ou pour "apprendre la vie" (oui, tout simplement), il est certain qu'il va produire un changement ici ou là.

A beautiful book that highlights the strength and courage of Trevor Noah's black mother, who had an illegal relationship with a white German-Swiss man during the apartheid era. Trevor recounts with humor and finesse his childhood, during which he felt excluded by the laws and culture of his native South Africa. Born a crime was a very enriching book, both culturally and generally. In short, this book is a great success.

My whole family is religious, but where my mother was Team Jesus all the way, my grandmother balanced her Christian faith with the traditional Xhosa beliefs she'd grown up with, communicating with the spirits of our ancestors. For a long time I didn't understand why so many black people had abandoned their indigenous faith for Christianity. But the more we went to church and the longer I sat in those pews the more I learned about how Christianity works: If you're Native American and you pray to the wolves, you're a savage. If you're African and you pray to your ancestors, you're a primitive. But when white people pray to a guy who turns water into wine, well, that's just com mon sense.

There is also this to consider: The name Hitler does not offend a black South African because Hitler is not the worst thing a black South African can imagine. Every country thinks their history is the most important, and that's especially true in the West. But if black South Africans could go back in time and kill one person, Cecil Rhodes would come up before Hitler. If people in the Congo could go back in time and kill one person, Belgium's King Leopold would come way before Hitler. If Native Americans could go back in time and kill one person, it would probably be Christopher Columbus or Andrew Jackson.
