That novel seemed at the beginning an obvious homage to Scott Fitzgerald, but toward the end the writer has brought some mitigation into it : a pinch of salt was needed and a shade of Patricia Highsmith's thrillers was added. With a lot of sociopathic characters... not to mention that Gatsby turned out alright in the end, in the eyes of Tom Ripley (Henry fell on his sword). Still, with intoxicating words and quite many substance abuse depicted, the tale is alluring, while the narration goes at a very slow pace : the mesmerized reader (that would be me) is subdued by this long and enduring mystery.
